Whispering
Whispering is not the necromancy of myth—there are no legions of skeletons to raise, nor grand armies to command. It is the desperate, forensic act of reaching into the stagnant, radioactive reservoir of the Under-Weave to claw back data from the ghosts of the departed. A Whisperer acts as a “grief-engineer,” navigating the fragmented echoes of a soul to verify facts, recover secrets, or witness lost moments. It requires intense mental insulation, as the practitioner must force the universe to momentarily reassemble a blurred identity without letting that identity dissolve or, worse, pull the practitioner into the backlog with it.
Resolution
Success:
The Whisperer successfully anchors the ghost to the present. The conversation is clear, the echo of the ghost's identity is distinct, and the truth they provide is uncorrupted. The Whisperer maintains their composure, and the mental connection remains stable and contained.
Under the Threshold:
The roll lands between 1 and the Threshold. You establish contact, but the ghost is fragmented and confused, their identity rapidly eroding back into the shadow-silt. To make them coherent enough to speak, you must “fuel” the interaction. You must take immediate, unmitigated Strain or permanently sacrifice your own memories—forgetting a skill, a face, or a cherished piece of your own past—to stabilize the connection long enough to receive the information you require.
Botch:
A natural 20 represents a total failure of the anchor. The dead do not just answer; they attempt to come back through the line. The emptiness of the Under-Weave catches the trail of your magic, dragging you toward the Void. You take massive Strain as you fight to physically sever the connection before your own soul is pulled into the Under-Weave. The ghost may inadvertently pull a piece of you with them, leaving you permanently scarred, haunted, or dangerously adrift in your own mind.
