Channeling

Channeling is not the sorcerous act of “casting a spell”; it is the brutal, tactical science of using one's own nervous system as a human circuit board to ground and direct the raw, uninsulated energy of the Weave. A Channeler does not “summon” power; they act as a living lightning rod, dragging volatile, entropic forces through the material plane. This is an inherently destructive act—not just for the target, but for the conduit itself. The Channeler must calculate the “thermal load” their physical form can withstand before their biological tissues begin to liquefy, warp, or arc with the very energies they are attempting to project.

Resolution

Success:

The Channeler creates a clean, insulated path for the energy. The force is projected exactly where intended with minimal leakage. The Channeler maintains control, feeling only the standard “arc-burn” of a successful discharge—a momentary, manageable spike in physiological stress that fades quickly.

Under the Threshold:

The roll lands between 1 and the Threshold. The channel is “frayed.” The energy successfully strikes the target, but the Channeler’s nervous system fails to provide adequate insulation. The energy bleeds into the user’s own body, resulting in immediate loss of 1 Strain for every die of damage rolled. The Channeler achieves the desired effect, but their muscles spasm, their skin may sear, or they temporarily lose sensory input (blindness/deafness) as their internal “fuses” blow to prevent total systemic collapse.

Botch:

A natural 20 represents a total structural collapse of the Channeler as a conduit. The energy does not project outward; it seeks the path of least resistance, which is currently the user’s own heart or brain. This results in a Sympathetic Feedback Loop. The Channeler suffers a catastrophic internal discharge, taking one-half damage from the uncontrolled energy. Furthermore, because the energy was not grounded, it vents into the immediate environment, triggering a violent surge of entropy—causing nearby objects to rust, machinery to explode, or reality to tear open—potentially affecting the entire party.
