Binding

Binding is not the arcane art of “enchantment” or magical charm; it is the brutal, tactical practice of tying a knot in another’s will and tethering their intent to your own. A Binder acts as a surveyor of consciousness, identifying the fragile connective tissues of a target’s mind and forcing them to hold a shape of the Binder's choosing. It requires precise calibration, as the practitioner must calculate the “frequency” of the target’s psyche to avoid snapping the connection—and their own nerves—in the process.

The Resolution

Success:

The Binder successfully threads their will into the target’s mind. The knot is set cleanly. The target performs the requested action or experiences the desired emotional tether without realizing the intervention was external. The Binder maintains their composure, and the connection remains stable.

Under the Threshold:

The roll lands between 1 and the Threshold. The binding takes hold, but it is “messy”—a jagged, uneven knot that is prone to fraying. The Binder achieves their objective, but the target may feel a jarring, unnatural dissonance, or the connection may begin to rapidly degrade, forcing the Binder to expend additional resources to keep the binding from dissolving entirely. The spell gains the Concentration effect if it didn't already have it. If it did, the cost to maintain the spell is doubled.

Botch:

A natural 20 represents the catastrophic failure of the psychic tether. Rather than simply “missing,” the energy of the attempt backfires violently, resulting in a Sympathetic Reaction.

  • Backlash: The “knot” meant for the target snaps back into the Binder's own consciousness. This manifests as a sudden, localized psychological collapse or a surge of mental feedback.
  • The Cost: The Binder immediately suffers Strain equal to the difference between their roll and the threshold; this can be dissipated by immediately spending WP to reduce the Threshold.
  • The Domino: A Botch in Binding forces an immediate reaction roll from the party. The target—or anyone nearby—may become aware of the intrusion, triggering a “psychological alarm” that permanently alters the social or combat landscape, turning a neutral encounter into a hostile one.
