Thresholds
The Threshold represents the minimum quality required to overcome a challenge or the “oomph” you put into a narrative Stunt. If an action has multiple Thresholds, only the highest one counts.
Player Stunts
Players may “Call their Shot” before rolling by choosing a Threshold tier. If they succeed within the window (Threshold to Skill), they gain a Stunt Reward.
Risk & Reward:
Performing a stunt is a risky endeavor. While they allow you to enhance your successes, failure results in an equally flashy setback.
Environmental Thresholds
Sometimes the Threshold isn't a “Stunt” the player chooses; it's a Complication set by the environment. This represents “Minimum Quality Required.”
Environmental Threshold
| Threshold | Example |
|---|---|
| 3 | Minor mundane resistance (A stiff lock, a crowded street). |
| 6 | Complicated/interrupted tasks (A storm, heavy security). |
| 9 | Expert-level gates (Warded doors, masterwork encryption). |
| 12 | Supernatural suppression (Ancient curses, massive scale). |
| 15 | Near-impossibility (Punching through steel, outrunning a car). |
Layered Thresholds
A Layered Threshold occurs when multiple independent requirements must be satisfied by a single dice roll, most commonly appearing in combat as a combination of a Stunt Threshold and a target's Armor Rating. Unlike standard environmental thresholds, where only the highest value counts, layered thresholds “stack” to form two (or more) distinct bars that a player must clear with their d20 result to achieve complete success. For example, if a player attempts a risky combat maneuver against an armored foe, they may successfully overcome the Armor Rating to deal full damage while failing the higher Stunt Threshold, or conversely, achieve the stunt's special effect but only deal half damage because their roll fell below the armor's protection.
Player Stunts
| Stunt<br>Threshold | If the player's description… |
|---|---|
| 0 | …is a Basic Action. No flair, just doing the job. |
| 3 | …adds Aesthetic Flair. They use the scenery but stay grounded. |
| 6 | …is Tactically Complex. They are doing two things at once or using a gimmick. |
| 9 | …is Supernaturally Brazen. They are showing off their heroic side openly. |
| 12 | …is Reality-Warping. They are treating the scene like a movie climax. |
| 15 | …is Actually Impossible. This shouldn't work, but they are Heroic Masters of their trade. |
