The Core Mechanic
The core of this system is the Roll-Under High mechanic. When you act, you don't just want to succeed; you want to succeed with Quality.
When you roll a d20 against your Skill Rating, compare the result to the following tiers:
Ace
Rolling a 1 on the d20 is called “Acing the Roll” and is considered a critical success. You ignore any Thresholds and gain a minor environmental bonus.
Under the Threshold
Rolling higher than a one but lower than the Threshold. Success at a cost. You achieve your goal, but it is messy or exhausting.
In the Window
A result higher than the Threshold but lower than your Skill Rating. A professional, high-quality success. If you committed to a Stunt, you gain the additional benefit.
Bullseye
Your roll is exactly your Skill Rating. Skill-based critical success. You achieve maximum possible impact and double any Stunt benefit.
Failure
A result higher than your Skill Rating. Standard Failure.
Botch
Rolling a 20 on the d20 is called “Botching the Roll” and is considered a critical failure. The situation actively worsens, and a resource is lost or broken.
Favor & Disfavor
Sometimes, circumstances make an action more likely to succeed. In these instances, we grant the character Favor, and they get to roll an extra d20, taking the more favorable result.
Other times, the circumstance makes an action tougher. We call this rolling with Disfavor. The player rolls an additional d20, but they must take the least favorable roll.
