Bestiary Rules

This section details a selection of creatures representing a broad spectrum of threats to your player characters.

Reading a Monster Entry

Every monster entry has the following statistics in common. They are designed as a guide to how to run the monster. However, they are not set in stone. Interpret them as you see fit for your scenario.

Description

This is a basic description of the monster. It will include a physical description as well as a basic breakdown of the monster's tactics.

Aggression

The monster's Aggression determines how many actions it takes each turn. Roll Initiative for each point of aggression and the monster acts at each of those Initiative counts.

They also have one reaction they may take in addition to their Aggression rating.

Hit Points

Monsters have Hit Points, just like player characters. When they reach 0 HP, their Death Clock is equal to their CON Base Talent.

Attributes

The creature,s Attribute scores with Base Talent in parentheses and talent die underneath. When in doubt about a roll, ask if this is a common action for the creature. If it is, add +5 to the Base Talent to determine the creature's skill rating to roll against.

Size

A monster's size is compared to that of the average Human. If a monster has a unique shape - they are tall, long, etc - it will be noted here.

Movement

This determines how many meters the monster can move in a single round. If it has a special method of movement, such as flight, it will be noted here.

Armor

A monster's Armor rating is the same as a player character's. It acts as a Threshold against incoming attacks.

Typical Gear

If the monster normally carries equipment of treasure, it will be listed here.

Abilities

A monster's special abilities or considerations will be outlined at the end of it's stat block. Monster abilities are used just like their attacks, you can activate one as an action on their initiative count.

Attacks

These are the most common attack methods of the creature.

Resources

Resources are some unique items you can gather from the creature's corpse/territory. Rolling under the threshold means your harvesting damaged the resource.

Trait Ratings

Monsters have the same Attributes as

Traits over 20

Whether it's a Skill or an Attribute, when you need to roll against a trait that is higher than 20, it is considered an automatic success. Mathematically, you cannot fail this roll. However, we will still roll to determine just how good the success is.

  • Thresholds: Treat Thresholds as usual. Rolling under the Threshold means the success is partial or at a cost.
  • Criticals: Rolling a 1 is still a Lucky Critical. Rolling a 20 is still a Skillful Critical. However, your Skillful Critical range increases as your trait does. Subtract 20 from your trait and apply that to the Critical Range. For example, a Trait rated at 24 has a Critical Range of 16-20 and a Trait rated at 30 has a Critical Range of 10-20.

Monster Sizes

Tiny

Tiny creatures are exceptionally small—often under two feet tall or long—encompassing nimble or nesting entities like rats, bats, and small birds that can easily share a combat space with larger foes.

Small

Small creatures generally range between two and four feet in height, representing compact but fully capable threats like weasels, badgers, or diminutive humanoids that require their own distinct presence on the battlefield.

Medium

Medium creatures occupy a space roughly equivalent to an average adult human, serving as the standard baseline for typical mercenaries and common humanoid adversaries.

Large

Large creatures span roughly eight to ten feet in dimension and loom twice as large as a man, encompassing massive beasts like lions, bears, or wild boars that command significant physical space.

Huge

Huge creatures are truly colossal entities that dwarf ordinary mortals, commanding expansive areas of the battlefield and representing legendary, terrifying monsters capable of crushing normal opposition beneath their sheer mass.
